SaRA Health received confirmation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that the platform is categorized as a ‘Software as a Medical Device’ (SaMD).

Steven Coen, SaRA Health CEO

“The insurance codes that we facilitate require a Software as a Medical Device,” CEO Steven Coen told bizblip “We provide a way for providers to engage with their patients outside of the clinic, so that recovery process never has to stop.”

The new set of codes for ‘Remote Therapeutic Monitoring’ came out in 2022. They allow patients without monitoring devices to get data back to their clinicians outside of a visit, and allow that clinician to be compensated. SaRA Health started with pilots with therapists in the areas of musculoskeletal and respiratory health.

“Physical Therapists in particular, have been doing these activities ad hoc for decades and just haven’t gotten paid for it,” Coen said. “We help them get paid for something that they’ve been doing and we make the process easier on them.”

SaRA Health, headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, was established in January 2018. The startup empowers healthcare providers with the digital infrastructure needed to connect with their patients outside the clinic effectively. Coen says 2022-2023 year-over-year growth was 12X, and the company recently hired Amanda Andrews Owens as Chief Outcomes Officer. Owens, an experienced physical therapy industry leader, is primarily tasked with helping existing customers better engage with the platform and their patients. The company recently received a $50,000 non-dilutive grant from LaunchKC.  Bizblip readers first heard of the startup when Coen went to Omaha for the ‘Get Started Omaha’ pitch competition in early 2022.
