A digital hearing therapeutic for people suffering hearing loss, known as clEAR since 2015, is now re-branded as Amptify.
“We learned that if patients are going to engage in computerized training, it has to be exciting, interesting, graphically attractive, and our original product wasn’t,” CEO Nancy Tye-Murray told the 4thEst8. The re-branding was announced last November at a conference in Florida. “We officially launched sales starting last week.”
The re-branding came about because feedback from users demanded significant changes in the service.
“Patients wanted to have more input about their hearing loss than just developing listening skills. And we didn’t have that feature… We focused on developing a new product, Amptify, which is digital hearing healthcare,” Murray said. “We also saw that this was a prime opportunity in time… the FDA is just about to approve over-the-counter sales of hearing aids. Audiologists are scrambling (to differentiate themselves from) Costco’s and Sam’s.”
Product improvements to meet customer needs and the re-branding to reflect the changes has resulted in greater interest in Amptify by trade journals and trade conventions where Murray is asked to speak.
“That’s not because of clEAR, it’s because of Amptify,” she said. “Changing the name distinguished us from our original product and I think that was crucial… and the new name is jazzier.”
The original name, clEAR, stood for ‘customized learning exercises for aural rehabilitation.’ Murray is a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis as well as a published author. Her book “Foundations of Aural Rehabilitation: Children, Adults, and Their Family Members” is in it’s fifth edition and is available on Amazon as well as other book sellers. She founded her company in 2015. It is based in St. Louis and has three full time employees.
