Erika Boeing, Accelerate Wind CEO

After repeatedly dodging interview requests from bizblip, Accelerate Wind CEO Erika Boeing confirmed to the Birmingham Business Journal that her startup has moved to Birmingham, AL.

Earlier this month bizblip reported how Accelerate Wind landed $250,000 from Innovate Alabama – something  administrators said at the time was only available to startups headquartered in Alabama. A year ago Accelerate Wind raised an undisclosed pre-seed round from TechStars Alabama Power Energy Tech Accelerator as well.

A roof-edge wind capture technology (vertical axis wind turbine) company with a  commercialization strategy that relies on appealing to existing solar system installers by adding an easy to install wind collection system to their renewable energy product offerings, the startup has been largely fueled by SBIR grants since its inception in May, 2016. It also was an Arch Grants 2016 cohort member. Known grants total $1,525,000.

The company filed for a patent in 2018 for a multi-bladed rotor connected to a continuously variable transmission, a flywheel and a generator.

In 2021 the company was selected for the U.S. Department of Energy, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Distributed Wind Competitiveness Improvement Project. The CIP grant funds a 2 year project for pre-production prototype development. Accelerate Wind is one of eight awardees that will share $2.2M in DOE funding and leverage about $1.3M of industry cost share.
