College Viability just uploaded another year of financial information on private colleges in the United States. The website and app was created by Gary Stocker on the premise that not all of these colleges will even exist when incoming Freshmen are due to graduate – and neither parents, lenders, nor prospective students have any idea which ones. He just uploaded another year of data to the site, but it isn’t the data he would like to have.

Gary Stocker, College Viability founder

“The data is from fiscal years 2018 and 2019,” Stocker told the 4thEst8. “Colleges… are notoriously slow for releasing financial information.”

Stocker’s site and app provide tools for evaluating risk, and he offers a freemium and paid membership. He claims about 100 users for the venture. The company is for profit, but it’s been completely bootstrapped by Stocker, and he’s done all the work. And he says the pandemic may force failure and consolidation beyond that which College Viability suggests.

The startup was founded in Dec. 2018, is headquartered in St. Louis at Stocker’s house, and is a member of ITEN.
