EmGenisys has been issued a new patent covering the use of short real-time embryo videos combined with machine learning to predict embryo characteristics — its 16th issued patent and the only one of its kind in the IVF industry.

Cara Wessels Wells, EmGenisys CEO

“Since day one, intellectual property has been a core part of our strategy,” founder and CEO Cara Wells told bizblip. The company recognized early that building a strong and defensible IP portfolio would be critical as AI solutions proliferate in reproductive biology. Wells said patents strengthen enterprise partnerships, increase company value, support licensing opportunities, and create barriers for competitors entering the same technological space.

EmGenisys analyzes short microscope-recorded embryo videos to help clinicians identify which embryos are most likely to result in a successful pregnancy — without relying on costly time-lapse incubator systems. Founded in 2019, the company operates a cattle IVF division with customers globally under the product name Envision, and is testing an embryo sex prediction tool called Engender. Its human fertility division operates as Viable Bio Sciences.

EmGenisys has raised more than $1 million in grants and competition awards and closed a $1.5 million seed round led by Grit Road Partners. The company has also applied for a €2.5 million European Innovation Council grant.
