First, the good news for Missouri is that more and more Unicorns ($1B valuation startups) don’t start or end up in Silicon Valley. EquipmentShare, Nerdy and Benson Hill are all good examples of this phenomenon.

And it’s a trend that is going on around the globe according to a report out this week by Startup Genome. First off, the number of Unicorns is on the rise, with a record 540 tech startups achieving that status in 2021.

So the total number really shot up in 2021, perhaps an anomaly.  But the number of ecosystems producing at least one Unicorn has been rising steadily for a decade… topping 113 in 2021.

More than 7% of all Unicorns move from wherever they started to another ecosystem, with most (41%) global startups moving to the United States… 14.3% of those going to Silicon Valley and 50% moving to New York.  Additionally, 27% of the companies that moved were U.S.-founded Unicorns that took their headquarters elsewhere within the country.
