From a field of 18,000 St. Louis food tech startup Mighty Cricket is one of 100 companies in the final round of the FedEx Small Business Grant Competition.

“This  round is a community voting round, so we have a shot here now!” CEO Sarah Schlafly told the 4thEst8. “Three winners receive $50,000 grants and then I believe seven winners receive $20,000 grants. You can vote once every 24 hours. Working on a bootstrapped budget, we would make an even mightier splash with $50K”

Schlafly launched Mighty Cricket in 2017 to apply a very old technology – the cricket – to a modern food and sustainability problem. A pound of cricket protein takes a fraction of the water and other natural resources to make when compared with cow protein. An equivalent mass of crickets emits far less greenhouse gas than a cow as well. Products include protein powders, flours, oat meals and protein bars. In addition to online sales Mighty Cricket can be found in St. Louis at The Alpine Shop, Momentum Cycles, The Annex Coffee and Foods, and AO&CO Market and Cafe as well as some HyVee supermarkets in the Midwest.
