Five early stage startups have been selected, and are preparing their pitches for next week’s Pitches Get Stitches (and $500) pitch competition.

“It’s hard to select candidates for this competition because we don’t want to hurt ones that are too early stage or have a well established startup come in and dominate the competition,” said bizblip publisher Paul Riat. “The selection committee outdid themselves. These five are at a really exciting point of their early development and each has a strong story.”

The five startups are:

  • Jabberwocky – a database with zero dataset-specific optimizations
      • Founder: Daniel Weisman  “Pitching for the challenge. Can we explain a technical product to a non-technical audience in 2 minutes?”
  • Pool – a mobile dating app involving friends
      • Founder: Becky Brosch “Pool would be honored to pitch next week
  • Farmicology – a manufacturer of bio-energy reactors
      • Founder: Chico Weber “”I can’t wait to tell the world what I have been working on!”
  • Visual Intelligence – an app to track use of prescription eye drops
      • Founder: Njideka Ezenwa Eke  “I am ready to step into this space to get the conversation going!”
  • Euler Science – a search engine for patents and scientific literature

This is the third iteration of Pitches Get Stitches this year. The winning team will take home a $500 check and automatically qualify as one of five teams to compete in the inaugural TechSTL Pitch Breakfast during Startup Week in November. Teams there will compete for a $10,000 cash prize. The Sept. 20th Pitches Get Stitches is sponsored by Balto, TechSTL and will be held at the UCity location of TechArtista.  Venture Cafe Executive Director JP Johnson will emcee the event.
