Four early stage startups were awarded a combined $25,000 in non-dilutive funding at the Washington University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Awards.
The Skandalaris Venture Competition winners are:
- 1st Place and $10,000: Sobriety Hub. Operations management and systems for sober living homes.
- 2nd Place and $7,500: Top Tutors for Us. Connecting Black high school students to Black college students for counseling and test prep.
- 3rd Place and $5,000: ChiChi. A breakfast food made from chickpeas, instead of oats.
- 4th Place and $2,500: MiDoc. An at-home medical device for remote heart and lung physical exams.
“We’re going to use the $5,000 to make a lot more chickpea oatmeal,” ChiChi founder Chiara Munzi told bizblip. “Oats have very high carb levels… causing a sugar crash.”
“The $2,500 will be spent on improving our prototype and proving our MVP (minimally viable product),” MiDoc CEO Linda Wu told bizblip. “We have a basic MVP and we’re going to extend it out to make it more robust.”
WashU alum and CareSignal CEO Blake Marggraff was also awarded the Alumni Achievement in Entrepreneurship Award.
“This recognition became even more humbling after I had the opportunity to see the caliber of the finalists,” Marggraff told bizblip. “Alongside my new entrepreneurial peers and fellow alumni, I am proud to be a member of the WUSTL founder community.”
