Challenged with launching a viable startup in 54 hours, participants in the Columbia, MO Startup Weekend have been feverishly working on their projects since Friday afternoon… and the Sunday evening judging is only a few hours away. Team ‘discovAR’ is an AR-based virtual education platform.

“The problem is that virtual labs pivoted to during Covid don’t give the students the ability for failure that is essential for learning,” said Charlie Dake, discovAR business analytics. “With augmented reality we’ll be able to provide a more visual learning experience for students to learn their mistakes in things like biology and other sciences.”

To start they’re building 10 basic labs to learn fundamental biology lessons around cells, with others labs gaining complexity to ones where students can disect virtual cadavers. The goal is to eventually allow teachers to use discovAR as a design tool to develop their labs within their curriculum in order to then sell their labs to other teachers.

“Originally we were going to design all the labs,” Dake said. “We pivoted more to the marketplace aspect because it allows greater flexibility with teachers.”
